After the commercial success of Batman Forever a fourth Batman movie was commissioned by Warner Brothers. Joel Schumacher was again given the directors chair and was also on board for a planned fifth movie to be called Batman Triumphant. Having similar doubts to his predecessor Michael Keaton, over the progression of the lead character, Val Kilmer decided to pass on the opportunity to revive his role. George Clooney was quickly signed up in a three movie deal.

Ingrid Ferrin who worked with Bob Ringwood on Batman Forever joined forces with Robert Turturice to design the costumes for the new film. Director Joel Schumacher was a former costume designer himself and had a lot of input into the look of the film. The Batsuit created for Batman and Robin is again altered from the previous outings. The costume has changed slightly in each film. The overall look is more akin to the 89 Batman with a muscle six pack design to the stomach. The most controversial element of the new suit was the nipples which were added.

The cowl is actually a subtle black colour with strengthening supports around the forehead. The ears are also reinforced at the tips. There are two loops at the side which help attach the cowl to the main body of the suit, small bat shaped clips were used to do this.
