This is the rocket powered miniature Batmobile used in the 1995 Joel Schumacher movie Batman forever which starred Val Kilmer as “The Caped Crusader”.

This elaborate model is one of just two made for production. The first, identical to this aesthetically was a “pull along” model requiring wires to make it move on the miniature set. The model featured here in the Prop Store collection is self powered by an onboard engine and rocket jet and fully remote controlled!

The Batmobile, Batman’s preferred mode of conveyance, has featured throughout Batman’s history in comic book, TV and movies. It first appeared in the Spring of 1941 in “Batman #5” and has evolved numerous times since. It has changed in all the recent movies too and this model represents one of the better looking designs. It was conceived by production designer Barbara Ling and built under the supervision of legendary model maker Grant McCune.

The motor for driving the wheels is battery powered, this also illuminates the headlights, cockpit, side detail and the famous Bat logo on the wheel hubs. The “jet” section of the engine is gas propelled. There is a nearby chamber which contained chemical crystals that allowed the colour of the flame at the back of the car to change from blue to red as the gas passed over it. This spectacular effect can best be seen when the Batmobile is forced to climb a wall! The car was used in many other special effects shots where a full size vehicle would prove totally impractical.

The Batmobile is approximately 3 feet long, the chassis is made from metal with the main bodywork fibreglass and resin, the tyres are rubber. There is a removable hood at the front which contained the grappling hook and cable used in that same wall climbing scene.
