A full size alien creature used in the Steven Spielberg masterpiece Close Encounters of the Third Kind. This tiny figure stands just over 40 inches tall. It was designed by Joe Alves and it left a lasting impression on moviegoers all over the world.
The head is made from a durable slip latex and painted a green grey colour. The eye detail has been painted over the latex and the pupil is left open for the child actor to see out. The long fingered hands are made from the same material. The costume itself is made from spandex. The soles of the feet have rubber grips glued to them. Young girls of approximately 8 – 10 years of age were used as extras in these scenes as Spielberg thought that girls would look more elegant and graceful than boys.
The friendly aliens reveal themselves at the extraordinary climax of the movie when the mothership lands and the secret landing strip by The Devils Tower. The ramp lowers and the creatures wander out to greet the humans and make contact.
Close Encounters was released in 1977 to huge box office figures and critical acclaim. It was nominated for 8 Oscars (winning for best cinematography) and remains on of the director’s best loved movies.
