Our favourite Colonial Marine’s close quarters weapon of choice was this pump action shotgun. This hero weapon was the only one supplied to the production and was used exclusively by Michael Biehn (who played Cpl Hicks). It was originally constructed as a live fire weapon which fired blank rounds during its use on set. It has subsequently been safely and sympathetically deactivated to make it safe for public display and to comply with UK law.

The weapon itself is an Ithaca 12 guage pump action shotgun. The gun was altered for filming by having its original hand grip replaced with a World War II MP40 pistol grip. During filming the grip had gaffer tape wrapped around it – but this has sadly long since been removed.

Most memorably seen on screen when Sergeant Apone demands that all Pulse Rifle clips have to be handed in, Hicks reveals the shotgun and loads it ready for battle. Also seen  in the quintessential close up alien despatching encounter where Hicks rams it down the throat of a particularly unlucky attacking creature, gleefully pulling the trigger and uttering the immortal line “Eat this”.

Despite being deactivated, it retains full functionality, and the pump action still entertains those who get to handle it. Interestingly, most who do handle it always seem to mutter “I like to keep this handy for close encounters”
