  • Scale and Color Reference Photos
    6th September 2011

As part of our ongoing effort to improve the presentation of our product listings, we will now be including a scale and color reference photo as the final image in the photo set for all of our product listings. While we have always included scale information in the description of our products, having the scale measure within the product photo allows our customers to more accurately envision the size of the piece being offered.

The scale and color reference photo also includes an industry standard ColorChecker Classic chart, which accurately documents the true colors of the piece being offered. The color chart allows photos to be properly white balanced and color corrected to ensure that you are viewing the true colors of the piece on your own monitor. Although the chart is a reasonably advanced photography tool, we recognize that many of our customers are archivists of sorts, and we hope that you will appreciate this effort to better document the pieces that pass through our hands. It also allows us to record true colors for future comparisons and for posterity. The dimensions of the ColorChecker chart are 11 3/8" x 8". The scale measure and ColorChecker chart are not included with any purchases. View.

  • Decorating Raiders - Michael Ford's Journal
    15th July 2011

Set Decorator Michael Ford worked in the film industry from over 40 years, and won two Oscars during his career, for Raiders Of The Lost Ark and Titanic. Raiders was Ford’s second production with Lucas Film, having previously decorated The Empire Strikes Back. Ford dressed the sets for Raiders at Elstree before moving on to Tunisia to dress locations there. The British decorator kept a daily journal while working in Tunisia, which was part working notes and part personal diary. On the 30th anniversary of the release of Raiders, Ford has allowed us to share this journal. The entries below are transcribed exactly as they were written during production, and we have annotated them where possible with additional information. This offers a rare candid, if brief, insight into the production of the film that would become a legend. View

It went through a long list of different studio’s, directors and endless re-writes before landing on the desk of Rob Reiner. • Captain Jack Sparrow's costume from Pirates Of The Caribbean At Worlds End has been added to the Collection page
    31st March 2011

The hugely popular Pirates of the Caribbean movies have grossed over $2 billion worldwide and there are yet more movies in the series slated for production. For all of its special effects and lavish sets it is the complex character of Captain Jack Sparrow which beguiles audiences. Johnny Depp was eager to play the role and basing his performance on rock legend Keith Richards (who makes a cameo appearance in the third film) a cinema icon was born. Sparrow appears sometimes selfish, sometimes brave, often witty but rarely ethical. A character whose own motives are not always clear and who would prefer to talk his way out of a tricky situation rather than fight. View.

  • Norway – “Hoth” filming locations Part 2
    28th March 2011

The next morning, the group met with their guides—Terje Olsen and Erling Nesbo. Terje has been around Finse all of his life, though he was too young to be involved with the filming of Empire. Erling, however, worked on the production of the film. As Erling did not speak English (and the expedition did not speak Norwegian), Terje served as the group’s protocol droid and interpreter. He provided the expedition with Erling’s specific curriculum vitae with regards to his work on EMPIRE.“[Erling] was the head of security, and transport, and things like that. Most of the people who stayed here at the time were extras in the film. His sister, and brother-in-law were extras.” They showed Erling their reference photos and Erling seemed to recognize the majority of them. It was a promising start. View.

  • The movie poster artwork from High Plains Drifter has been added to the Collection page.
    25th February 2011

Although Clint Eastwood had made Dirty Harry by the time High Plains Drifter came along in 1973, he was most definitely known to the general public as a Hollywood cowboy. He redefined the genre with Sergio Leone in 1964 with A Fistful of Dollars and has always tried to reinvent the western each time ever since. High Plains Drifter was the first western that Eastwood directed and it is one of his finest. It is the story of a ghost-like character seeking revenge in the isolated prairie town of Lago, a theme he revisited in Pale Rider (1985) View.

    25th February 2011

This impressive and imposing looking weapon was carried by the characters Vasquez (played by Jenette Goldstein) and Drake (played by Mark Rolston). It consists of an MG42 belt fed machine gun with dressing and specially fabricated add-on components. The “trigger” is a Kawasaki GT motorcycle brake lever, the front barrel dressing is derived from a motorcycle foot rest and the grips are Kawasaki GT switch gears. The muzzle brake (the very tip of the gun, that looks like a castle turret) was specially made then added to alter the look of the barrel and adds a finishing touch to the overall detail to create a unique looking weapon which is still reminiscent of real world weaponry.View

  • A flamethrower from the Sci-fi classic Aliens is now on the Collection page
    15th February 2011

Along with the Pulse Rifle this is perhaps the most recognisable and sought after of the entire Aliens armoury. Used throughout the movie by the Colonial Marines and predominantly by Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley character in the films exciting climax. Flame thrower units strike a particular chord with many fans of the Aliens movies due to the heritage of a similar weapon being the sole defence against the original creature in Ridley Scott’s 1979 masterpiece, Alien. • The Darkness miniature from Legend has been added to the Collection page
    15th February 2011

The making of Ridley Scott’s epic Legend is almost as interesting as the movie itself. There are at least 4 different cuts of the film, two different musical scores and a soundstage that burnt down halfway through principal photography. The initial release, now referred to as the European cut ran for 94 minutes and contained Jerry Goldsmith’s score. The following year, 1986, saw the US release at 89 minutes and a new score from Tangerine Dream. There are numerous differences between these two versions and then there were additional changes made for a television version which also ran at 94 minutes. The “directors second cut” now on DVD and is generally considered the definitive version, runs at 113 minutes. View.

    9th February 2011

While Arthur C. Clarke’s third principle of scientific prediction is most often applied to science fiction storytelling, it could just as easily be used to describe the age of enlightenment that began in cinematic visual effects in the late 1970s thanks to a little film called STAR WARS. The chief sorcerer behind the film who led the renaissance of not only visual effects, but also the entire movie business, was a 20-something engineering kid from Southern California named John Dykstra. In a recent discussion, he looks back on the experience of creating the STAR WARS universe from nothing more than a script and George Lucas’s unique vision. View.

  • Fizzgig from Dark Crystal has been added to the Collection page
    8th February 2011

Fizzgig is a strange, fluffy creature that inhabits the fantasy world of Thra, in landmark movie The Dark Crystal. He is clearly a coward but has all the attributes of a watchdog. He is almost completely fur with two tiny paws. Standing about the size of a small cat he is currently posed, bearing teeth, on a custom made stand. Fizzgig is a glove puppet (sorry Muppet) with thick, soft, stripy fur, he has three rows of sharp, dirty teeth and piercing yellow eyes. The world Thra and the creatures that inhabit it, were designed by Brian Froud who later worked again with Henson on Labyrinth. View.
