Golden Compass, The
Iorek Byrnison Maquette

A maquette of the armoured bear Iorek Byrnison from the production of the 2007 action adventure film The Golden Compass. Iorek, voice by stage and screen legend Sir Ian McKellen, is one of the ‘Panserbjørne’, a proud race of talking bears from the frozen northern land of Svalbard. This superb model of him was used as an original creature study and aided the development of the creature’s design throughout the production process. It allowed the team to interact with a solid representation of the CGI character in real life, for perhaps experimenting with lighting to see the throw of the shadows, or even just to see his giant size in relation to the young girl Lyra. The model has been painted with a phenomenal level of detail, complete with fur detailing, tiny black claws, eyes and nose, and a set of discoloured bronze armour. He stands at 29cm (11.5”) tall and 49cm (19.25”) from nose to tail. Some of the paint has flaked off in places to reveal the resin underneath, showing just how well used it was during the production of the movie.
