Silent Running
Pneumatic Drone Arm
Stock # 24599
This is an original pnuematic arm used on one of the Drone robots from the 1972 Sci-Fi film Silent Running. The arm can be seen throughout the film on the three Drone robots. This is believed to be the only Drone arm used on camera, and was swapped between the various Drones as needed.
In the film, the Drones are characters instrumental in helping a crewman preserve one of Earth's last plant specimens. They are considered a predecessor to classic film robots like R2-D2.
It is understood that another version was built that was electronic, not pnuematic, but it never worked properly and therefore was never used. This pneumatic arm was built by Douglas Trumball's father, Don Trumbull. This piece was originally obtained from Douglas Trumbull.
The arm is missing a few of the plastic dressing panels that are seen in the film, and at some point colored tape has been added to some of the hydraulic cylinders, to identify and differentiate them. The piece is in good condition and could likely be made to function again.
Additionally, this item comes on a custom display stand which features the film’s logo laser-cut on the front. The logo illuminates by ultra-bright LED lights, powered by replaceable batteries, and can be easily switched on/off with a button located on the display's back.
This item comes with a Prop Store Certificate of Authenticity.
