Last Samurai, The
Samurai Warrior Costume

A stunning set of samurai armour from the 2003 Tom Cruise movie The Last Samurai. The elaborate Japanese costumes and weapons were made by the legendary WETA workshop in New Zealand who were also responsible for the costumes on The Lord Of The Rings trilogy for which their design was Oscar nominated. This suit was used throughout the film during many of the battle sequences and during the preparations for battle by Katsumoto’s (Ken Watanabe) villagers.
The costume consists of a full set of outer armour made from durable vinyl and thick cotton straps which includes a 'do' (torso section), a pair of 'sode' (shoulder guards), two 'kote' (armoured sleeves which are made from a rubber moulded chain mail), a 'kusazuri' (armoured skirt or apron) and a pair of 'suneate' (shin guards). These are made from a durable vinyl which is then secured to a patch of thick cotton with matching straps. The costume also includes a dark blue cotton undersuit, a pair of 'tabi' (leather socks with double toe), and a red sash belt.
Additionally, this costume includes a stunt Samurai short sword. The rubber bladed weapon, which was created for actor’s safety during filming, has a resin guard and decorative handle featuring a dragon design under the handgrip. Completing this impressive piece is the black scabbard, which features a black fabric strap. This item measures approximately 23” (58cm) in length and has some light scratches on the scabbard, but the sword along with the costume remains in good, production used condition.
