Thessalonian Shield

A Thessalonian shield used in the 2004 action film Troy starring Brad Pitt, Eric Bana and Orlando Bloom. The shield is made from wood covered in canvass with padding on the front for the actor’s protection. On the back are two leather carry straps which are held in place with rivets, which can be seen on the front. The kidney shaped shield has been painted white with a pale grey extended ‘S’ shape painted in the centre, has been distressed and shows plenty of signs of use on set, as well as dried sand in places! This style of shield can be seen clearly being used by the Thessalonian army during the first scenes, when Achilles (Brad Pitt) is summoned to fight the giant warrior Boagrius, so Agamemnon (Brian Cox) can claim the land and army of Thessaly for his own, and later as part of the Spartan army in the spectacular mass battle scenes. Measures 88cm x 58cm (34.5”x 23”).
