An issue of Look magazine from the production of Antonia Banderas’ 1999 comedy / drama film, Crazy in Alabama. After murdering her abusive husband, Lucille (Melanie Griffith) flees to Hollywood to become a movie star. Meanwhile her nephew, Peter (Lucas Black) finds himself witness to a racially-motivated murder committed by a county sheriff. Following a protest at the town’s municipal swimming pool which turned violent, Peter’s parents are seen arguing about an issue of Look with him on the cover. His Aunt Lucille is also seen thumbing through the same issue while on a film set after hours.
Printed in the style of a vintage magazine, this piece features 120 pages of articles and advertisements, the highlight being a mock article discussing the incident at the town’s community pool titled “One Southern Town’s Night of Agony.” This title is also featured on the cover of the issue over a photo of an eye-patched Peter as he holds a girl during the chaotic event. While most of the pages in the magazine have an aged and browned tint to them, the inserted article is printed on more pristine white pages and is essentially a reprint of another article in the issue, ornamented with photos from the sequence throughout the five page spread.
