The Cat's (Mike Myers) Remote Control Hat and Cap from Bo Welch's 2003 adaptation of the Dr. Seuss classic, The Cat in the Hat. The film follows two young siblings whose boring, predictable life is instantly turned upside down by the appearance of the mischievous Cat. This hat was made for use during scenes when the hat had to move as if independent from the Cat.
This hat is made of wire coils that have been covered with red and white felt to match the character’s iconic look. The piece includes restored electronic components operated by a switch and controller. These pieces have been newly added to allow the hat to function as originally intended. The hat now runs on four AA batteries. The hat features a plastic cover on the inside with inset magnets. These magnets attach to a fiberglass skull cap that would attach to the actor’s head to secure the hat to the Cat costume. The fiberglass piece is padded on the inside to allow for a reasonable level of comfort when in use. Though light restoration has been done to allow the mechanics to function, the hat remains in great condition.
