Gladiator

SFX Roman Cavalry Sword and Plate

Stock #65865

A special effects sword used in Ridley Scott’s Academy Award winning epic Gladiator. Betrayed by his Emperor’s son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) and sold into slavery, Roman general Maximus (Russell Crowe) finds his calling in the arena as a gladiator. But when a festival of games begins in Commodus’ honour, Maximus returns to Rome with thoughts of revenge for his lost Emperor and family.

Cavalry swords were used by the horse-mounted infantry of Maximus as they battled the horde of barbarians on the Roman frontier. This particular sword was used for special effects sequences to demonstrate a deep penetrating wound in a barbarian soldier. The base plate of the sword wrapped around the torso of the wounded barbarian, hidden underneath their furs and armour.

The sword is made with a hard rubber blade and a three-piece rubber grip. The sword guard has a band into which is moulded “SPQR” while the pommel is made in the form of a large sphere and features a floral decoration on top. The handle is finished in wood effect paint while the blade has a metallic paint finish to recreate the appearance of iron. The blade is attached to the base plate by two screws which were used to keep the sword upright during stunt use. Additional stability was provided by slits in the base plate, to which two synthetic webbing straps with plastic buckles were woven through.

The grip has production damage with a bent pommel and the blade has slight damage with small holes through stunt use during the bloody Germania sword fights. The sword and plate remain in overall good production-used condition.
