A set of concept art used in the creation of the "Sil" creature for the 1995 erotic sci-fi horror Species. A message from outer space gives humanity the code needed to create a human-alien hybrid. But when their creation, Sil (Natasha Henstridge), reaches puberty, the docile human turns into a sex-driven beast looking for one thing – to reproduce.
Acquired from visual effects legend Richard Edlund, this set of images was used in visualising Sil in her final alien form, and is comprised of nine pages of production facsimiles of artwork by H.R. Giger and two concept images by XFX, the special effects company involved in the making of the physical Sil creature headed by Steve Johnson.
The set of production facsimiles, printed in black and white on US Legal-sized paper, contain a range of sketches showing Sil's head, tongue and other facets of her deadly body, including her spine spikes. An additional page shows an early sketch of the ghost train seen in the adolescent Sil's nightmare as she flees the laboratory on by train. The set is stapled at one corner and has three holes punched on the left hand side for storage within a binder.
Accompanying the facsimiles are two concept sheets from XFX showing the transformation of Sil in her adolescent form and the transformation stages of the adult Sil. Both images are printed in colour on white paper.
Displaying minimal wear from its time in use on the 1994 production, the set remains in a good production-used condition, with the largest of the images measuring 35.5cm x 21.5cm (14" x 8.5").
