Walt Disney’s response to Star Wars in 1979 was their first ever PG rated movie The Black Hole. Although pre-production apparently began in 1975 it opened two years after George Lucas’ groundbreaking movie and was not as well regarded by critics and audiances. The special effects however raised the bar once more and it boasted a high profile and talented cast including Ernest Borgnine, Robert Forster, Maximilian Schell, Anthony Perkins and the voices of Slim Pickins and Roddy McDowall. The Black Hole remains an important film in the history of the Disney Corporation, as it lead to the studio seeking out more adult themes for their productions and ultimately resulted in the formation of “Touchstone Pictures” in 1984.

The USS Cygnus is commanded by Dr Hans Reinhardt played by Maximilian Schell and sits on the edge of the titular black hole. The ship is protected by a number of Sentry guards, powerful loyal robots who safeguard the running of the vessel. They prove to be a worthy obstacle for our heroes from the USS Palomino.

The Sentry Guard helmet in the Propstore collection is made from fibreglass and painted a brick red colour and detailed with silver foil eyes, there are three silver painted panels to the rear. The mesh detail and the mouth and ears is metal. The helmet separates in the middle as it would have been far too tight to wear otherwise, the two pieces are then fixed in place around the actor via bolts at the chest and shoulder. The Sentry guards are an indelible part of many childhood memories, along with V.I.N. CENT, B.O.B and the evil Maximilian robots.
