This is the full size prop “Switchblade” used by Pierce Brosnan as James Bond in the 2002 movie Die Another Day. The one man “stealth glider” is designed to be steered down to earth by only the most experienced of parachutists, at a height of not lower than 1500 feet the vehicle is abandoned by the skydiver and he will then deploy a parachute to land safely. A second chute is activated on the glider so that no damage is sustained to it or an innocent chap perhaps out walking his dog.

In the movie, we see both Bond and Jinx (played by Halle Berry) use Switchblades as they leave a Hercules plane over North Korea. There were only two of these special Switchblades made for filming and were custom sized for the two leads. This is Brosnan’s, the larger of the two. Although the scene is brief the vehicles are nicely showcased and another memorable example of Bond with an advanced gadget.

The design for the Switchblade is entirely practical and they are used around the world. The Die Another Day glider in our collection has more limited functionality. There is a motor that powers the wings and there is an internal wiring system available for additional use. It is 8 feet long and weighs around 50 lbs. The body is constructed of carbon filament and epoxy fibreglass and there are also some vac formed plastic panels. This was almost certainly used for studio special effects and green screen shots. It currently hangs high in the skies of the Prop Store warehouse.
