The costume worn by Carrie Ann Moss as Trinity in the 1999 classic The Matrix, a sleeper box office smash that produced two sequels and host of inferior imitations. This outfit consists of shirt, jacket, trousers, belt and knee length boots. Together they form an instantly recognizable sexy costume that itself has been “homaged” by many subsequent female leads. The costume was designed by Kym Barrett and we have elaborately displayed the outfit in perhaps the most recognizable pose of the film.

We meet Trinity as first mate to Laurence Fishburne’s Morpheus character aboard the hovercraft Nebuchadnezzar, a ship operating away from the simulated, artificial environment of the Matrix, a world created by sentient machines to farm the energy produced by humans. Trinity guides our hero, Neo (Keanu Reeves) in the ways of the shocking reality he is plunged into and ultimately the two characters fall in love.

Trinity’s costumes have become iconic image of the trilogy and this is the first outfit we see her wear. It is also significant in that it is memorably worn for the initial rooftop chase which concludes with the groundbreaking “bullet time” sequence. The concept of “bullet time” was brought to the world’s attention in this movie, an incredible special effect that allowed the audience to watch an action scene in slow motion at a moving vantage point. Although used prior to the 1999 blockbuster it was The Matrix that set another benchmark for computer effects in the movie industry, in fact the term bullet time is now copyright of Warner Brothers.
